One of the most important and beloved sport events is just about to start – Euro 2016, held in France. We Europeans are crazy about football (or soccer, as it is called in the America) and we can’t wait for kickoff! That’s why we, Sotrender teamed up with Betegy, a great sport startup predicting game with results based on various algorithms, to try to predict who will be the next European Champion.
While Betegy professionally predicts games’ results and says that Germany, current holder of World Cup, will win Euro this year (achieving what Spain did in 2008 and 2010). We took a less serious approach and asked ourselves a question: what if it was social media that decided who would win the match? Surprisingly, the group stage has quite a similar outcome in both predictions, but the champion in ours is, well, unexpectedly England, which has the biggest following on social media.
We also took a look at individual players. The most popular in social media is of course Cristiano Ronaldo, with over 111 million fans on Facebook. Will he also be the most valuable player of the tournament? We’ll have to find out, but Betegy bets that the footballer with the most goals will be Germany’s Thomas Muller.
